When it comes to creating Turkish delicacies, few are more dedicated to the task than Recep, who recently opened his store, Simit Sarayi, at Roxburgh Village.
One of the reasons that Recep chose to open in Roxburgh Park is also one of the reasons he loves his job: because it’s home to a strong middle-eastern community with a deep fondness for traditional pastries and sweets.
“What I love about the customers and locals that visit Melbourne Simit Sarayi is that they are able to resonate with the feeling of being in Turkey as soon as they enter our store,” says Recep.
Prior to establishing Simit Sarayi in May this year, Recep had years of experience turning out Turkish sweets and specialty cakes through his wholesale business, Pastry Plus.
His hands-down personal favourite product is his version of a Turkish bagel, or simit.
“Our namesake. Our original,” he explains.
While people often think of indulging in Turkish sweets as an after-dinner treat, Recep says the broad selection of offerings at Simit Sarayi can be enjoyed at any time of day.
“Most people don’t know that we are more than suitable for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We’re open from early morning to the evening, seven days a week, ready to assist with all appetites and desires.”
The days are long, but Recep reckons it’s worth it to help spread a little joy in the community.
“The highlight of my profession is being able to see my customers’ faces light up as a result of our service,” he says.
In his short time at Roxburgh Village, Recep has become a huge fan of Smoking Joe’s and says he’s excited to create lots of happy memories in the centre.
